The cornerstone of the Science corner is the Oceanography & Physics building. When constructing this space, they added a fun design feature honoring both departments. If you see the windows, one side has a blueish-green tint to represent the ocean while the other side features black windows to represent dark matter.
The Oceanography department provides several hands-on learning opportunities for students with their Marine Aquatics Facility, which provides studies of the biomechanics of marine life. With the coastal location of campus, they also own a 55-foot research boat which is used to study the Chesapeake Bay and its estuaries.
They partner frequently with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. On the Physics side, they have the Nuclear Physics High Bay, which is used to build and test large detectors for nuclear physics. Physics students have opportunities to collaborate with Jefferson Labs and NASA during their time at ODU. Click here to listen now.
