About BFA Printmedia

Tools for studio practice and research

📃 About BFA Printmedia

You’ll explore print media in theory and practice, researching its history while getting hands-on with etching, letterpress, bookbinding, and digital processes. Collaboration and social engagement are part of the program, pushing you to create art that matters. Alum Chelsea Wong (BFA Printmaking 2010) expresses joy as an “act of resistance” in her paintings and murals. As you expand your interests into independent projects, you can draw inspiration from our city’s many museums, galleries, alternative art spaces, publishers, and more.

🛠️ Tools for studio practice and research

Our facilities are based at the RayKo Photo Center, with plenty of cross-over with peers in Photography. You’ll share access to state-of-the-art printers, photography methods, and bookmaking equipment. You can make paper by hand or create a large-scale installation like Joseph Blake (BFA Printmedia 2022) did with fellow student Joel Lithgow (BFA Individualized Studies 2022). Workshops are also held around the corner from our main campus at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

RayKo Photo Center

Printmedia and Photography facilities are now located a short bus ride away from campus (and blocks from the world-class museums the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art). From an exhibition gallery to a print check area to darkrooms and color labs, you’ll have total freedom to experiment with printmaking techniques, photo processes, book arts, and digital media.

San Francisco Center for the Book 📚

Located just two blocks from the main building, the San Francisco Center for the Book is a world-class bookmaking letterpress studio. This space offers ongoing workshops, exhibitions, and community events celebrating all things books.
