Produces graduates who are prepared for entry-level employment, upon licensure, as Class “A” commercial truck drivers. Program graduates are to be competent in the technical areas of hours of service regulations, vehicle inspection procedures, basic backing skills, defensive driving techniques, basic driving techniques, driver fatigue recognition and recognition of driving environment hazards. Applicants to this program must complete the Commercial Truck Driving admission application, the TABE assessment thru RSTC’s Adult Education Program, and be 18 years of age. Additionally, applicants must provide a motor vehicle driving record (MVR) for the last three years. Students will also submit a D.O.T. physical, drug screen, and Commercial Learners License in order to register. While enrolled, students are subject to random drug and alcohol tests in accordance with the Department of Transportation Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
CDL(Licensure) Career Insights Diesel Mechanics
The diesel engine is the workhorse powering the nation’s trucks, heavy equipment and buses all around the country. The diesel engine delivers more power, is more efficient, and is more durable than its gasoline-burning engines today. Diesel-powered engines are fast becoming more prevalent in lighter vehicles, including passenger vehicles, pickups, and heavy-duty work trucks. Diesel service technicians, mechanics and diesel tech's, which includes performing daily and monthly maintenance on bus and heavy to light duty diesel trucks.
Many diesel technicians and mechanics also work on heavy vehicles and construction equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, road graders, and farm equipment like tractors, and combines. Technicians will need a state commercial driver’s license (CDL) in order to road test trucks and buses on public roads. Diesel mechanics student will receive courses in : Preventative Maintenance, Heavy Utility Vehicle Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Fundamentals, Heavy Vehicle Steering and Suspension Systems, Vehicle Maintenance & Safe Operating Practices, Basic Engines, Electronic Engine Systems, Advanced Engines, Fuel Systems, Heavy Utility Vehicle Safety, Heavy Utility Vehicle Fluid Power I, Heavy Utility Vehicle Fluid Power II, Heavy Utility Vehicle Body Electrical Systems I, Trailer Maintenance and Inspection, Trailer Air Brakes and Suspension System, Trailer Electrical Systems, and CDL License Test Preparation.
