💵 Financial Aid
When we see potential in a student, we do our best to make sure tuition doesn't get in the way of her or his future. Ninety-one percent of Saint Mary's students receive some form of financial aid. Enabling students to access a Saint Mary's education is part of our commitment to individual attention and a part of our Lasallian heritage.
Typically, students receive a combination of state and federal grants, Saint Mary's grants, and need-based and non-need-based government and private loans. Those are all in addition to the many merit-based scholarships from noteworthy academic performance and specific department honors. Many find the best combination of these resources, making the average Saint Mary's financial aid package approximately $38,000 for the 2018-19 academic year.

Eligibility and How to Apply
Are you eligible for Financial Aid?
Saint Mary's will consider you for federal, state, and institutional aid if you meet the following criteria:
You are an admitted, readmitted, or currently enrolled student in a degree program at the College before notification of awards can be made. All financial aid applications should be filed prior to admission.
You are a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Federal and state funds are also restricted on the same basis.
You are a student registered on a full-time basis. Students who register less than full-time, but at least half-time, will be considered only for the federal loan and grant programs. Undergraduate students enrolled less than half-time can only be considered for Federal Pell Grant funds.
It is Saint Mary’s College of California policy that students who matriculate as freshmen are only eligible for four years of Saint Mary’s aid. Those who transfer in have the number of years remaining that will equal four years. So if a sophomore transfers in he/she will have three years of eligibility a junior will have two years of eligibility. Cal Grant is only available for a maximum of four years. Therefore students who continue on after four years will only be considered for federal aid (Pell Grants and student loans).

January Term
January Term is one of Saint Mary's most unique and appealing programs. During a month-long course held every January, undergraduate students get to explore a single topic in great depth at an accelerated pace. It features a unique blend of opportunities on campus and around the world.
For both students and faculty, January Term can be a laboratory for experimentation in both subject matter and technique. It offers all of us a chance to try new ideas and explore topics in greater detail than is possible within the constraints of a regular semester. It is in keeping with the College’s mission that we offer this unconventional space of freedom and challenge to our students and faculty.
As a program, January Term has several Learning Outcomes that students should gain during their time at Saint Mary’s College. These learning objectives are in addition to the specific content of each January Term course and are part of what makes the January Term program unique from other courses students might take en route to a major or minor degree.
January Term at Saint Mary's College offers a curriculum of rigorous, intensive, unique courses outside students' usual realms of inquiry using analytical, focused, immersive, and experiential methods of pedagogy and critique, with the aim of broadening the academic, social, cultural and spiritual life of the College, in accordance with a Lasallian ethic of social justice, civic responsibility, and personal transformation.
