🔬 NSU's School of Biological & Physical Sciences

The School of Biological and Physical Sciences offers several comprehensive programs that prepare students to enter into the job market competitively at the bachelor level or to further their education in either graduate or professional school.

Mathematics

The NSU Department of Mathematics is committed to high standards in innovative teaching, research, and providing a quality educational experience for students in the Bachelors of Science in Mathematics program. The department is an established leader in using technology as a tool for learning. All NSU students are required to use graphing technology as an integral part of their core mathematics courses.

Computer classrooms and laboratories/learning centers are available for undergraduate research, classroom teaching, computer aided instruction, and tutorial assistance. In addition to the computer laboratories, mathematics tutoring is available to all mathematics students in the tutoring laboratory.

Computer Information Systems

The Computer Information Systems program offers curricula leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in CIS. We offer this program on-campus in Natchitoches, online, and in a competency-based format (through Electronic and Continuing Education). We also stream selected CIS classes to the Leesville/Fort Polk, Alexandria, and Barksdale campus each semester.

If you are interested in learning about the technology of the future, how to use technology to make a difference in the world, or want to explore their love of technology whether it is coding, taking apart a computer, or exploring a new technology, this program might be for you!

Hospitality Management and Tourism

The Hospitality Management and Tourism degree program of Northwestern State University is committed to fostering a student-centered learning environment that empowers individuals and prepares them to be successful industry professionals and lead enriched lives by providing relevant coursework, experiential learning, and service-based involvement throughout the entirety of the degree program.

There are three concentration areas within the degree program that students can choose from once their general curriculum is completed. Those areas are: Culinary Arts, Hospitality Services and Travel & Tourism.

The Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts serves students in the arts and media communities through education, performance, communication, and collaboration while providing a nurturing yet demanding environment of artistic study. Faculty and students produce art and media through hands-on experiences with live performances, multimedia productions, gallery events, public art venues, and professional and student media outlets. With a university tradition of education, the School of Creative and Performing Arts provides a solid foundation of arts education and professional skills for emerging artists, educators, and performers.

New Media, Journalism, & Communication

The need for good, professional communicators has only increased in today’s media world. Our program trains students for hundreds of jobs that require excellent communication skills. Students are mentored by faculty members, former professionals themselves, who demand excellence as they engage students in all media forms.

Course work and experiential learning opportunities prepare students for professional communication careers such as TV news anchors, reporters, multimedia journalists, podcast hosts, digital media content providers, social media managers, editors, photojournalists, graphic designers, writers, speech communication specialists, recruiting officers, marketing communication specialists, product managers, event planners, media ad sales personnel, higher education administrators, and scores of others.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in Communication at NSU puts you on the fast track for success. Available concentrations for the Communications Major include Strategic Communication, Journalism, Broadcast, and Digital Media Production, and Sports Media.

Engineering Technology is in the business of graduating problem solvers and decision makers for local, regional and national industry. Engineering Technology is designated as an Area of Excellence by the Louisiana Board of Regents. Our department has a long history in providing workforce training and supplying high quality graduates who empower the socio-economic development in the state of Louisiana.

As a department, English, Languages and Cultural Studies aims to provide rigorous programs that cultivate reading, writing, and research skills in an inclusive and close-knit community of engaged students, faculty, and staff. Our programs emphasize critical and creative thinking to prepare you for success in graduate and professional schools as well as in a broad range of career paths. Alumni have gone on to work in education, publishing, law, business, government, and film and have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize for poetry and won the James Beard Foundation Award for cookbooks.

📑 NSU's Interdisciplinary Programs

The Interdisciplinary Programs encompasses the degree programs of Bachelors of Arts in Liberal Arts, and Associate and Bachelors of Arts in General Studies. A comprehensive approach to an interdisciplinary studies program often involves making appropriate referrals elsewhere on campus to ensure that students’ diverse needs are met. Advisors are committed to on-going collaboration with faculty and staff to assist their students from the point of admission through graduation.

🩺 NSU College of Nursing

Northwestern State University was the first public institution in Louisiana to establish a baccalaureate program in nursing, welcoming its first students in 1949. The College of Nursing was also the first in the state to offer a master’s degree in nursing. NSU offers an Associate of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, LPN to ASN, LPN to BSN, RN to BSN program, Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Classes are available on Northwestern State campuses in Shreveport, Alexandria, Leesville/Fort Polk and Natchitoches. NSU’s College of Nursing is known throughout the state for graduating highly qualified nurses.

The nursing faculty consists of experienced health care professionals who are dedicated to preparing students to achieve their professional goals as responsible and contributing members of their profession and society. Members of the faculty regularly volunteer their time sharing their expertise and knowledge with organizations and individuals in the community, with many serving as consultants, leaders, and board members as part of their professional responsibilities in the local, state and national arenas.

A bachelor’s degree in psychology or addiction studies offers an overall understanding of the human mind and the opportunity to join one of the fastest growing job fields. Psychology graduates work in a variety of fields and settings including mental health, human resources, etc., while advanced education will open paths toward clinical practice and research. ⭐ NSU Social Work

Welcome to Northwestern State University Social Work Department. The social work program, which has been in existence since 1970, assists students in developing the knowledge, skills, competencies, and values to effectively help people confront and resolve personal problems and public issues. The Bachelor of Social Work degree (BSW) prepares graduates for immediate entry into direct social work and human services positions. Additionally, the degree allows graduates going on to Masters-level (MSW) social work programs, in many cases, to pass over approximately one-half of the MSW courses. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
