Overview
Vassar’s academics is characterized by an open curriculum that provides plenty of flexibility and space for students to take classes that interest them. There are three general requirements for students: foreign language, quantitative analysis, and first year writing seminar. If you are already proficient in another language other than English, you can test out of this requirement; if not, you can take a year of beginner level instruction or a semester of any higher level class. The first year writing seminar and quantitative analysis class can be fulfilled with a wide range of classes, and they help ensure that students have basic writing and research skills.
Otherwise, students just need to complete a major program and have a total of 32 units. The open curriculum also means there is a ton of space for correlates, double, interdepartmental, multidisciplinary, and independent majors.
