The Enormous Luther aka Gumby
This statue is called the Enormous Luther and was donated by the first graduating class of 1964. Originally this statue was meant to convey Martin Luther’s “enormous” ideas pertaining to the Reformation. When the statue was built it was made out of copper, and when copper rusts it turns green. So this statue started to look a lot like an old TV show character named Gumby from “Gumby and Pokey”! Now almost nobody knows who who Enormous Luther is - but everybody knows who Gumby is! He has become our unofficial mascot and can be found on posters, t-shirts, and water bottles.
