History
Birmingham-Southern College is a four-year, private liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Birmingham-Southern College is the result of a merger of Southern University, founded in Greensboro, Alabama, in 1856, with Birmingham College, opened in 1898 in Birmingham, Alabama. These two institutions were consolidated on May 30, 1918 under the name of Birmingham-Southern College.
About Birmingham
Birmingham earned the nickname “The Magic City” for the rapid growth and industrialization that it experienced in the early 20th century. Much like it was then, Birmingham is again experiencing a period of rapid growth. National companies such as Shipt, Regions Bank, and EBSCO Industries (founded by a BSC alum!) bring business to the city looking for the best and brightest employees- lucky for them, BSC students answer that call!
Birmingham is home to the historic Alabama Theater and a multitude of art museums, parks, concert venues, and event spaces. The Civil Rights Institute downtown highlights the tragedies and triumphs of our city during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The Birmingham Museum of Art is the largest municipal art museum in the Southeast. Just a few blocks away from that, you can catch a show at the annual Sidewalk Film Festival, which provides our Media and Film Studies majors a chance to see and be seen while pursuing their passion. We also have the minor league Birmingham Barons downtown, and several state parks for hiking and outdoor activities.
