Admissions & Financial Aid
The AU admissions review is a holistic process that takes academics, extracurriculars, recommendations, and many other factors into account. We know that students are more than their GPA and test scores. In fact, AU has proudly been a test-optional institution for more than a decade.
At American University, we believe that access to a world-class education should be open to all, not just a privileged few. Our need-based financial aid programs ensure that talented students have equal access to all that AU has to offer. In fact, last fall, 70 percent of our incoming freshman class received either need- or merit-based aid. All admissions applicants are automatically considered for merit-based aid.

Arts at AU
The visual and performing arts have a prominent role at American University. Rotating exhibitions at the AU Museum within the state-of-the-art Katzen Art Center emphasize regional, national, and international contemporary art. The Department of the Performing Arts, comprised of Arts Management, Audio Technology, Dance, Music, and Theatre/Musical Theatre, provides dynamic, connected, expressive, and fulfilling experiences for all of our majors, minors, and participating students.
